A Belated Birthday Post

My sweet little girl turned two years old last month. We had a super fun rainbow birthday party for her. I did a couple cute things I found on pinterest, but nothing crazy.

We had rainbow cupcakes (white cake with different colors of food coloring layered inside the cupcake – kind of a tie dye effect, this was super time consuming):
The rainbow fruit kabobs were time consuming as well, but a big hit:
I looked around for a rainbow birthday dress and eventually ended up ordering this one from thredup.com (used! In like new condition – I’ll post more about thredup another day, but joining through my link gets you a $10 credit (and one for me if you place an order)!!):
And here she is the next day trying out one of her birthday presents! It’s safe to say she liked it. Now we need to get her brother one with pedals for his next birthday (he has a balance bike for now though, and he can practice on this one until spring):
It’s hard to believe my little baby is such a big girl now! I go back and forth marveling about how she’s still so little, and already so big! She LOVES babies, I’ve been babysitting a 4 month old for a couple months now and she still has to give her a hug multiple times a day and says “I love you baby”. She tells me she loves me all the time, and that I’m a good boy. 🙂 She is really just the sweetest cuddliest little love bug, with a side of the usual “give me what I want” temper. Here’s to two!

A Belated Birthday Post

Ni-night Time

I just wanted to share a little series of photos I’ve taken the past three mornings of the girl. She starts out the night fine, in her own crib. Then anywhere from 1-6 am she wakes up and I’m generally so tired I just grab her and put her in bed with me.

Sunday morning

She’s lucky she’s cute, because that’s a king size bed she’s hogging! I don’t mind the snuggles but sometimes I just want to stretch out, and sleep for REAL – not that half-sleep-worried that she’s going to roll off the bed or get down and escape somehow.

Note: the flash on my phone added the eerie ghost-like quality to these pictures, we don’t live in a haunted house, or in a fog machine.

Sesame Street Birthday Banner

Sesame Street Birthday Banner

ss1I created this banner for my sons 2nd birthday and it is now available for instant download on Etsy! It’s very easy to put together, just print it out, cut along the solid lines, fold along the dotted lines, and tape the back of the fold together over whatever string you are using! I used red yarn and it worked perfectly. I am thinking of doing a Sesame Street theme again when the girl turns 2 in September, just because I love how this one turned out and I’d love to show it off again.

THAT WAY!!! (Tantrum video)

A little video I captured tonight during the girls “THAT WAY!!” Tantrum. I would like to point out that I took this with my phone, and it takes forEVER for my phones camera to a) load and b) switch to video.

And I spent a fair amount of time trying to convince her that her feet worked and she was in fact free to go “that way” before I ever even grabbed my phone.

Yet I still managed to get a good chunk of tantrum on video.

Three Things Thursday

The boy had his consultation this week and they did recommend having the surgery. Basically they said when his testicle descended the pathway should have closed up with scar tissue, but since fluid seems to come and go (the swelling fluctuates a bit) that indicates that the pathway did not close on its own. This could potentially lead to a hernia or other issues so they are going to go in and close it up with a couple stitches (that will dissolve), and drain the fluid out. The poor kid enjoyed his doctor appointment, he held stick still while he got checked out – all three times! First the students, then a resident, then the attending. He kept asking for “more doctor” (he thinks dr is a game where you listen to his heart, which is kinda true lol), and boy did he get more doctors! The good news is its an outpatient procedure so we will get to come home the same day, bad news is he can’t have anything to eat or drink after midnight. The drinking part is gonna be difficult… He’s a heavy drinker (lol, but for real the kid hits the juice and the milk pretty hard). And he’ll need to be somewhat “quiet” for about two weeks after (no swimming and no bikes).

Working out and dieting is still happening, though my hip hop abs has been put on hold a little bit. Our tv broke! We think its just a fuse and we were going to try to change it ourself, but once we saw the little glass fuse with the tiny fragile looking metal prongs holding it in place we were worried we’d break it trying to remove the fuse. Sooo we are going to take it to a professional. But it doesn’t fit in our trunk, and we have two kids and carseats clogging up the backseat. We’ll get it there. So I have been doing ok diet wise (great today… since we’re out of ice cream!) and I tried out our treadmill for the first time today. That’s kinda boring though, I need the video that holds my attention and keeps me going. I haven’t gained any back at least! But my total loss has not changed more than maybe .2 lbs.

The kids are both at excellent tantruming ages right now so I think my third thing today will be a little breakdown of the many fits I’ve witnessed today, just since 5pm (bedtime is at 9) – there were of course cute sweet moments too, but the tantrums were abundant tonight:

Boy (in car on our way home): Wanna go to grandma’s! Wanna go store! Want TWO grandpa’s! Want ice cream store! No not go home! BUT I WANT TO!

Girl (as I set her down inside the house and head back out to get still screaming boy out of the car): MOMMMYYY!! NOOO! THAT WAY!!!!!!!

Boy (as I bring him inside, in the rain): Want to play at our park! Want to jump in puddles! BUT I WANT TO! Grandma’s! Not inside! NOOO! Want cheese! CHEESE, CHEESE, STICK CHEESE!

Girl (still screaming): mommy! Mommmy! Myyymmmy!

Small break while both kids happily eat stick cheese. Times two, because they begged for more but I’m letting that not count as a fit for some reason. And crackers.

Boy: Want to make a fort! FORRRRT!

We make a fort.

Boy: Need 1 more! (Blanket!) need a flag! Need TWO flags!

Girl (still in a booster seat eating cheese and crackers): CRACKERRRRRS! (She wanted more.)

A bit later, after snacks have long been finished and the fort has been completed satisfactorily, daddy is in the kitchen making us some dinner.

Girl (on her own two feet, pointing to the kitchen, but not moving): THAT WAY! THAT WAAAAY! THAAAATT WAAAAAAYYYY-UHHHH!

Boy: Don’t want dinner! Want milk!

Girl: JUICE!

After dinner daddy offers the kids each half of a brownie grandpa sent home for them.

Boy: Don’t want it! Don’t like it!

(Girl would normally have thrown a competitive fit but she was busy stuffing brownie in her face.)

While playing a combination of trains/hide n seek/tickle with daddy:
Boy: Don’t! MINE!
Girl: Truck!
Daddy: share!
Boy: NOOOO Mine!
Girl: screams

Boy: You NOT tickle girl!
Girl (laying on floor expectantly waiting to be tickled): DADDDYY!

Boy (climbing the curtains behind the couch): Want to look out window! BUT I WANT TO!

Girl (“brushing teeth”, I’m trying to herd her back out of the bathroom): SELF! Brush! Screams bloody murder. SELFFFFFF!!!!

Boy (going potty with daddy’s help, taking FOREVER, daddy finally decides he’s not going to go and is done): Want to go potty! NOO! Waaaahh, BUT I WANT TO! WANT MOMMY CHANGE ME! (Into pajama’s)

Boy (sobbing dramatically): I don’t like my room!
Daddy: yes you do! Look at your awesome alphabet, and all your toys!
Boy: Don’t like it right now! Wanna take it down! (The alphabet on his walls.)
Daddy: No you like your alphabet, mommy painted all those letters just for you!
Boy: Don’t like my room, want downstairs.

Etcetera. I’m sure I forgot a few fits even. It’s a good thing they’re cute.

Swing set progress!

Our swing set is really coming along! We’ve got most of a fort (sans roof) with deck and bench, two of three swings, a slide, and grandpa says monkey bars are almost ready! Have I mentioned how awesome grandpa is? Super awesome!

Don’t mind all the other toys scattered about. Clearly the children are spoiled. 🙂

Three Things Thursday

I’m on a diet. Who isn’t, right? It’s only day… 9 I think. But I’m down 3.8lbs according to my fancy weight watchers scale – and a fabulous website (and app!) called caloriecount.com! This app helps me figure out the appropriate amount of time it should take to meet my goal weight, gives me the number of calories I should shoot for in a day, allows me to enter the foods I consume (and look up the nutrition info right in the app/on the site – a SUPER great feature!), allows me to enter my calories burned (you choose your lifestyle for a baseline, then add extra activities such as walks), tracks your calorie deficit for the day, gives me a letter grade based on my nutritional values that day (I suck and am striving to get better than a B+, it’s hard!), tells me which aspects of my diet are too low/good/too high (I need more iron!), and even has the option to share your daily synopsis with other users, or on Facebook if you choose. You can support other users, chat in the forums, or just track your own info and keep to yourself. I think it’s great and has really helped me see my progress and what I should work on. Highly recommend!

In addition to using calorie counter and working on improving my diet (believe it or not I wasn’t eating frequently enough, and it’s hard to correct that!) I have also started doing “hip hop abs”. Which is kind of hilarious if you know me… I have no coordination, or rhythm. But I do it! And the more I do it the slightly betterish I get. It’s not “hard” per se, I am fully capable of doing the whole workout (so far, once I finish this post I am moving onto today’s workout – which is the first night doing both the fat burning cardio AND the ab sculpt – *gulp*) but I have trouble combining a specific leg movement (or step) with a specific arm movement – PLUS remembering to “tuck, tilt, and tighten” my abs along the way. Eep! But I’m sticking with it. I just posted about it on the Internet, so now I HAVE to!

This last thing is not about me but follows along the health theme of my post. The boy had a checkup this week, all is well and he’s growing like a weed as he should. But. We’ve been keeping an eye on some swelling in his private area (hell, it’s his testicle). It comes and it goes but it’s been coming and going for at least a year and is pronounced enough that we’ve got a referral to see a specialist. They will check it out and determine whether he needs surgery to have the fluid drained. :/ It is called hydrocele testis, and we know two adults (or two close enough to have heard about it) that have had the procedure, so I guess it’s fairly common – but painful (the procedure, he’s in no pain right now). I’m not really worrying about it yet, but I’m not looking forward to it exactly either. I do very much realize that of all the things we could be sent to a specialist to check out – this is by far preferred to many things! But there is a small chance it’s a tumor, so keep your fingers crossed for us.

Four Things Friday

This is what happens when you forget to post on Thursday! 🙂

Sunday is Mother’s Day! I hope you all feel extra loved and appreciated this weekend. I put in a special request for Sunday but I’m not sure yet if it’s definitely happening. I would like to go out to breakfast somewhere and head to the zoo! The *other* zoo in the area than the one we usually go too. It’s smaller and friends have described it as “disappointing” but I’ve never been and want to go! Plus they have a giraffe, which is something our usual zoo does not have. And they have free admission for moms on Mother’s Day.

My original three things post was going to be some gift suggestions for mom’s like me (read: not all moms will agree). So lets get on with that!

Three FREE gifts that mom(s like me) would love this Mother’s Day!
1) Let her sleep in! ACTUALLY sleep in – don’t pile in bed with her and watch tv. Don’t crouch beside her bed and watch her sleep. Don’t ask her twenty-twelve times if she’s done yet. Don’t let the under five crowd cry and throw fits outside her door… keep the noise level to a minimum and wait patiently until she emerges on her own! Also: no middle of the night wake-ups preceding the sleep-in.
2) Make her breakfast! But wait until she gets out of bed on her own time. And ask her what she’d like (or where she wants to go – though… Admittedly that’s not free).
3) Clean up after yourself! You don’t even need to go all out and clean the house (though bonus points if you do!) but make an effort not to leave a trail of dirty clothes, wet towels, crumbs and toys throughout the house. Mom will notice. Mom will love it!

Three things mom(s like me) do NOT want this Mother’s Day.
1) Jewelry. Look, I know this goes against everything the commercials tell you, but look at me. Do I ever wear anything more than my wedding rings? Unless there’s something specific I’ve shown you and said “I really want this exact item” – skip it. Sorry. I still love you.
2) Flowers. Again, I know you’ve heard otherwise. But flowers cost money, and then they die. But before they die they sit on my counter and I have to try to keep them alive and keep the cat and the children from eating and playing with them. I’d rather not. If you’re gonna do flowers get something that can be planted outside. Some tulips or a rosebush perhaps! But plant it for me. And take care of it too. That’ll show me you love me!
3) Another pair of pajama pants. You’re right, I DO love my soft warm and comfy pj pants! But I just got like 4 new pairs for Christmas. I’m good with the pj pants for a bit.

Three AWESOME gifts that mom(s like me) would love for Mother’s Day!
1) A family fun day full of activities SHE would enjoy! As I mentioned I asked for breakfast out, and the zoo! I would absolutely love to work in stopping for an ice cream cone, a nap, and end the day with a movie of my own choosing (even if I’m choosing from our own Disney DVD collection). Talk about an awesome day!
2) A massage! Or manicure/pedicure, whatever pampering she’s into! I personally love foot rubs. I’ve never had a professional massage, so that would be neat! But I would appreciate a good foot rub from my husband just as much.
3) A night off! Arrange for mom to have some time to herself – not necessarily on Mother’s Day but preferably during the week following. Let her know you got a sitter or you’re on kid duty on ___ night and she’s free to make plans with friends, or go shopping, or stay home and watch tv in her pj’s in the dark. Whatever she chooses to do! Heaven!

Four Things Friday

Preface: Math Not Included

My stepfather (otherwise known as “Grandpa”) is planning to build the kids a play set this summer, and soon I think. He was asking me questions about what we want and asking me to look up slides for prices. How exciting! Not surprisingly I have been doing some web searching on the subject and have a few shares for you all. Firstly, a couple quick links to free plans:

  1. 25 Free Backyard Playground Plans for Kids
  2. Free Swingset Plans (includes wood and metal sets) – on this page scroll down and click the “Specs & Downloads” tab to load a list of downloadable PDFs

As far as slide pricing I’m finding they range from about $89 – $399. We will likely be leaning toward the $89 wavy slide (though I originally wanted a non-wavy slide, it just seems like the bumps would slow you down!) – it’s the same wavy green slide you see on most peoples play sets (and that is surely because it is the most reasonably priced). It also comes in yellow, and I think I would lean toward the yellow. I get wanting it to blend in but I don’t mind bright kid colors… I actually like them a lot. And the swings we already have (and will be using) are pretty bright, so we might as well stick with a color scheme!

But the purpose of this whole post is to show you the beautiful drawing I made of what I would like for our play set! Monkey bars! A double-decker fort (using the enclosed bottom level for toy storage)! Climbing wall! Three Swings! Oh my! It is a bit wishful, we may not end up with all the extra items (ultimately this is going to be builder/financier/grandpa’s decision), but I think if we do it right we could probably build the basic frame and add extras (like the monkey bars) later when the kids are bigger. The boy LOVES the monkey bars at the playground, but he’s not actually big enough to do them himself yet anyway.

Here it is in all it’s math-less glory! (Not only is this not to scale, but I also did not have a straight edge handy, and I chose to ignore basic perspective rules (the monkey bars would come straight forward off the fort, not at an angle as shown). Don’t judge.)
